Chinese startup Butterfly Effect introduced a new artificial intelligence tool named Manus last week. Unlike traditional chatbots, Manus autonomously performs various tasks, from booking tickets to sorting resumes, based on simple user instructions. Co-founder Yichao “Peak” Ji describes Manus as “the next paradigm of human-machine collaboration, and potentially a glimpse into AGI.”
Despite its invite-only access, Manus’s official Discord server has rapidly grown to over 170,000 members, indicating high expectations for its capabilities. Defined as a general AI agent that bridges minds and actions, Manus possesses the capacity to autonomously execute a variety of tasks.
Manus’s abilities range from stock analysis to creating personalized travel guides. For instance, it can generate visually compelling dashboards providing comprehensive insights into Tesla’s market performance and financial outlook. Additionally, it can prepare a custom travel handbook for a trip to Japan.
The launch of Manus is seen as a significant step in the field of artificial intelligence, heralding a new era in human-machine interaction. However, its widespread adoption will depend on effectively addressing potential challenges such as technical stability and ethical or regulatory considerations.
