Google Unveils Gemini CLI: An Open-Source AI Agent for Developers’ Terminals

Google has announced Gemini CLI, a new open-source tool that integrates the power of Gemini AI models directly into developers’ terminals. Gemini CLI empowers users to perform coding, debugging, content creation, research, and task management through natural language commands from the command line.

Available free of charge for individual developers, Gemini CLI grants access to the advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro model simply by logging in with a personal Google account. The tool sets an industry-leading free usage limit, allowing users up to 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day. For professionals requiring advanced or concurrent operations, usage-based billing is available via Google AI Studio or Vertex AI keys.

Gemini CLI is tightly integrated with Google’s Gemini Code Assist, enabling seamless AI-powered assistance both in the terminal and in code editors like VS Code. As an open-source project licensed under Apache 2.0, Gemini CLI welcomes community contributions, code reviews, and security audits. It is designed to be extensible, supporting evolving standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and various customization options.

With Gemini CLI, developers can not only write code but also run commands, edit files, customize prompts, and automate workflows directly from the terminal. This innovative AI assistant represents a significant upgrade to the coding experience, aiming to boost productivity and efficiency for all users.
