Google Chrome Gets AI Boost: Gemini Now Browses the Web for You

Google has announced comprehensive AI updates for its Chrome browser. Built on the Gemini 3 model, these new features aim to fundamentally transform users' internet experience. The update includes Auto Browse, a side panel interface, Nano Banana image editing tools, and deep integrations with Google apps, evolving Chrome from a simple browser into a digital assistant.

Auto Browse stands out as the most notable innovation in this update. This AI-powered browser agent can complete multi-step tasks on behalf of users. Time-consuming chores like comparing flights and hotels, scheduling appointments, managing subscriptions, renewing driver's licenses, and preparing expense reports can now be delegated to Chrome's AI. Google announced the feature will initially roll out to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. Importantly, critical decisions like purchases and bookings remain under user control.

The redesigned side panel brings Gemini alongside every Chrome tab. Available on MacOS, Windows, and Chromebook Plus, this feature enables users to multitask without opening separate tabs. Beta testers have used it to summarize reviews across sites, compare shopping options, and manage packed calendars. The Nano Banana AI image editing tool is also integrated directly into the browser, allowing users to edit images found on the web without downloading files or switching applications.

Gemini in Chrome is establishing stronger connections with Google's ecosystem. Integrations with Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube, Google Flights, and Shopping allow the assistant to pull relevant context and take actions across apps. For example, when planning a trip, it can reference an old email, check flight options, and draft a follow-up email to travel companions. Google announced that "personal intelligence" will come to Chrome in the coming months. With user opt-in, Gemini will remember context from past interactions to deliver more tailored and proactive help across the web.
