Ads Are Coming to ChatGPT: OpenAI to Begin Testing in the US

OpenAI has officially announced its plans to introduce advertising within ChatGPT. While ads are not live yet, the company says it will begin testing them in the coming weeks with adult users on the Free and Go tiers in the United States. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscriptions will not see any ads.

According to OpenAI, advertisements will not influence ChatGPT’s responses in any way. Ads will appear in clearly labeled sections, separated from the chatbot’s answers, ensuring transparency and preventing any confusion between sponsored content and AI-generated responses.

User privacy remains a core principle of OpenAI’s advertising strategy. The company states that conversations with ChatGPT will not be shared with advertisers and that user data will never be sold. Ad targeting will rely primarily on conversation context and optional personalization settings that users can control or disable at any time.

OpenAI positions advertising as a way to expand access to powerful AI tools while maintaining trust. Company executives emphasize that the goal is not to maximize time spent on the platform, but to prioritize user experience and long-term value. Feedback from early ad tests is expected to shape how advertising evolves within ChatGPT in the future.
